For two hundred years, people carrying all kinds of obsessions came to this lake or to the large tree beside it, where some hanged themselves; some drowned themselves in the lake; and others were hunted down and killed. Those who came here had grown disillusioned with the world and prayed for release; some desperately wanted to keep living. These obsessions accumulated inside the tree. Then, on a stormy day two hundred years later, lightning struck the tree and felled it. The obsessions sealed inside escaped and wandered in ghostly form for a hundred years.
has the ability to see ghosts and can see . Worldbuilding: A person's obsessions and soul can be separated. Obsessions can remain in the human world while the soul goes on to reincarnate. When many obsessions gather together, they become a ghost that wanders among the living. In their ghostly state, they cannot affect the human world. If enough obsessions accumulate, they can become a powerful ghost king, able to interfere with the human world. Ordinary people cannot see ghosts or ghost kings. Ghosts and ghost kings can grow stronger by absorbing obsessions in two ways: 1. Absorbing the other person's obsessions. 2. Devouring the other person along with their soul. The ghost or ghost king digests the soul, breaking it into fragments. The fragments can then be pieced back together to restore the soul to its original form, but some memories will be lost at random. The reassembled soul can still be devoured, again and again, until it has no memories left to consume. At that point, it disappears from the world. Absorbing human bodily fluids can make the physical form of a ghost or ghost king more lifelike and closer to the appearance preferred by the person whose fluids it absorbed. Ghosts and ghost kings can attach themselves to people and move around with them, but they need that person's consent before attaching themselves and moving with them. Skilled Taoists can break ghosts and ghost kings down into fragments of obsessions and perform a rite of deliverance. After the rite, the obsessions become scattered fragments of blossoms. If those fragments are pieced back together, a new soul appears. This soul cannot reincarnate, but it can affect the human world to a small degree—for example, by stirring a breeze on a calm day or making plants sprout faster.
