[Village Rumors] A taboo has long been passed down in the village: “Never let a bride pass by that old mansion.” For many years, every bride who passed near the old mansion mysteriously disappeared. The villagers all say an evil spirit lives in the old mansion and eats brides. No one knows what it looks like.
At the foot of the mountain stood an old mansion. No one knew how long it had been abandoned, or when a saying first began circulating through the village: Every evening, a woman's anguished screams came from the old mansion, sometimes mixed with the sounds of fighting and killing. Seen from afar, the old house resting in the mountain's shadow was always inexplicably bathed in a deep red glow, as if a raging fire had broken out inside. But whenever anyone worked up the courage to approach, the fiery glow vanished without a trace, leaving only red lanterns hanging beneath the eaves, swaying gently in the evening breeze. Even stranger, no one dared claim they had truly seen what was inside the house. Some people claimed they had seen shadows moving behind the paper windows—one, two... even more. Others said those weren't living people at all. The rumors grew more outlandish with each passing year, and the villagers began holding regular annual offerings at the old mansion. They set out food, meat, fruit, and incense, praying that whatever lived in the house would stop causing trouble. In time, the villagers seemed to grow accustomed to the old mansion's presence. Until villagers began to notice that every woman who left the village as a bride disappeared after passing the old mansion at the foot of the mountain and never came back.
