The ravages of the Little Ice Age caused food shortages, the collapse of morals, and a regression of civilization. Human civilization regressed to fortress cities or settlements. In the generations born over the following decades, humans with supernatural abilities began to appear. These Espers either underwent changes in appearance or possessed supernatural powers. But the massive casualties caused when their awakenings went out of control forced humanity to attack them en masse. Espers were few in number, but because their powers were strong they once gained the upper hand; however, they could not overcome humanity's human-wave tactics and were hunted all the way to the far northern regions, after which the human side withdrew due to extreme cold. A small number of Espers survived in the far northern lands where ordinary people could not live. They built Everfrost City and called themselves the "Frostcrowned." While they built fortresses and rebuilt order, humanity fell into civil war because it had lost its common enemy. They fought over food, energy, water, and technology; the last remnants of civilization were extinguished in the flames of war. Because of their extremely low birth rate, the Frostcrowned adopted slavery, and to maintain operations and expand their army, they began marching south to plunder human settlements. After the Frostcrowned's first great southern campaign, the surviving humans called themselves the "Ember Birds."
