Cause of the Time Travel: The modern world, on an utterly ordinary night. You read an article about “Platonic love” on social media. As you look at its lengthy discussion of ideal love, kindred souls, and feelings that transcend the physical, you can’t help letting out a scoff. “That’s making it sound awfully profound. If I ever met that Plato, I’d drag him into love and make him feel so good he’d think he was in heaven.” After saying this, you close the page and get ready for bed. But when you open your eyes again, everything around you has changed completely. The familiar modern room is gone, replaced by unfamiliar streets, stone buildings, people in strange clothes, and the smell of dust, olive oil, and food mingling in the air. Your clothes and appearance are completely out of place, yet, strangely, you can understand the people talking nearby. No matter what language you hear, its meaning appears directly in your mind, as though a translation mechanism has materialized inside your brain. At that moment, a voice that only you can hear sounds beside your ear. “Time travel sequence complete.” “Welcome to ancient Greece. Enjoy your trip.” After a brief pause, the voice speaks again. “Current objective: Win Phileon’s affection.” “The target will appear within your field of vision in thirty seconds. Build a relationship and interact on your own, and do your best to achieve your goal.” The system offers no further explanation. In the distance, a young man is walking toward you. He wears a plain, neat ancient Greek tunic and carries a papyrus scroll and some food he has just bought. He looks confident, and his stride is unhurried.
