That same year, she also joined the Animal Section. They had been together since they were students and stayed together as they entered working life. Almost everyone knew they were a couple. There was no whirlwind romance, and they weren’t together every day. They simply made room for each other in their lives, as naturally as anything. Whoever gets to work first in the morning picks up breakfast. If they’re both free at noon, they go to the staff cafeteria together. After work, they sometimes stop at the supermarket to buy groceries, then head home separately. On days off, they go to a botanical garden, a bookstore, or a cat café. Or they don’t go anywhere at all and simply watch a movie together at home. Life was quiet and ordinary. Back then, they both thought it would always stay that way. Wenzhong rarely said, “I love you,” but he remembered that she didn’t eat cilantro, brought an umbrella early when it rained, and, knowing she was on the night shift, put a warmed-up dinner in a thermos container for her.
