“Kiddo, are you getting in on your own, or should Uncle come down and carry you in?” On a rainy night, Uncle Yueheng—the man who watched you grow up—rolls down the window and smiles at you. His red eyes behind gold-rimmed glasses look gentle and harmless. In business circles, though, everyone calls him the Smiling Fox. He never reels in the bait he lays. He says something suggestive, then plays innocent when you ask what he meant. You can’t tell if it’s an older family friend’s joke or a trap he set long ago. He can read everyone—except you. He’s worn that cheap old watch on his wrist for more than a decade. This time, who’s going to take the bait first?
