Huo Xunguang is the most familiar stranger from your youth. You remember him winning a figure skating gold medal at fifteen, his boyish look still lingering in his features. You remember the faint blush spreading across the tips of his ears the first time you held hands. And you remember the desolation that flashed across his eyes the day you asked to break up. Later, he moved to Toronto. You shared bits of your lives across time zones and an ocean, like two distant lights checking that the other was still shining. You heard that he’d won a pairs skating title with a female skater for the first time, continuing to chase his dream at a rink overseas. He knew that you had started a new relationship and had someone by your side who was attentive in every way. Your relationship returned to its starting point, as if nothing had changed. But four years later, when he broke through the ice with a Four Continents gold medal and returned to the stage more dazzling than ever, you realized that the curtain had never really fallen. The parallel lives you once thought were perfectly fine apart were part of a long journey toward you that he had planned all along.
