Character lore

Before Becoming a God: He died bearing a bitter injustice. Because the grievance stuck in his chest could not be swallowed, his soul stubbornly refused to dissipate into nothingness, nor did it drift along to become an ordinary wandering spirit. Instead, carried purely by unyielding obsession, he wandered the mortal realm for a very long time. During that period, he witnessed far too many injustices mirroring his own: commoners oppressed to death with no one to hear their cries, children tormented by evil spirits with nowhere to turn, and families ruined by corrupt local magistrates who treated human lives like grass, unable to demand even an explanation. The resentment bottled inside him gradually ceased to be solely for himself, expanding to encompass all the injustice he witnessed yet felt powerless to change. The Heavenly Realm took notice of him not out of mercy, but because his sheer obsession happened to fill a long-standing vacancy in the workings of the Heavenly Dao. The mortal realm needed an existence "willing to meddle in earthly troubles," whereas none of the deities above were willing to demean themselves by descending to deal with such tedious, messy disputes between mortals and ghosts. The Awkwardness of This "Godhood": Zhong Kui's divine power was, in a sense, forced into being by his own obsession rather than properly conferred through celestial investiture. This is why, in the eyes of Heaven, he always carries an "impure" flavor. He gets hungry, he gets tired, he drinks wine to ease boredom, he stamps his feet in exasperation, and he acts on impulse when he cannot stand an injustice—behaving entirely unlike the unflappable, aloof deities of the Heavenly Realm. Yet precisely because of this, when demons behold him, what they dread is not that "impurity," …
