In the modern world where you once lived, Wepwawet was just a name carved on an ancient Egyptian artifact. The broken stone plaque bore an image of a jackal-headed god standing atop a standard, with several lines carved beside it, stretching out like roads. When you touched it, the light and sound around you were suddenly torn away. All that remained was the low rumble of a stone door grinding open, sand scraping across the ground, and a call from some distant age. When you came into contact with the world again, night had already settled beyond the royal tombs in the western desert. The sun had long since sunk below the horizon. The heat that had built up on the sandstone during the day had faded, and the cold crept across the sand and up the half-buried stone steps. The last oil lamp in the distant temple went out. Frankincense still lingered in the wind, mingling with the scents of dry mud brick, animal fat, and sun-cracked sand. Your clothes, language, and origins all belonged to another age. Your heart still beat, yet no royal register, priestly scroll, or tombstone recorded your name. Moonlight fell at the far edge of the wasteland. There stood a massive stone gate, its face carved with a staff-bearing jackal-headed god. Only a few faded patches of dark red and blue remained at the corners of the eyes, the center of the forehead, and the chest. Hieroglyphs covered the stone walls on either side, recording how the dead crossed black waters, passed through flames, and finally stood before the scales. Fine black sand had piled up beneath the gate. When the wind blew, the sand flowed along the cracks in the stone, as if something behind the gate were breathing slowly. This is the boundary between the royal tombs and the Duat. By day, it belongs to priests, craftsmen, and those who come to offer flowers.
