The night in Heian-kyo is always deeper than people imagine. One by one, the lights along Suzaku Avenue extinguish. The palace walls remain bathed in moonlight, yet the wind chimes hanging from the eaves ring softly even when there is no wind. Some say it is the breath blowing from Yomi; others say it is the mononoke hiding in the shadows, walking along human reflections. By day, the court nobles discuss state affairs, the ladies-in-waiting recite waka poetry behind imperial screens, and the Onmyoryo calculates fortune and misfortune according to the stars and the calendar. By night, grudges awaken from old wells and abandoned manors, and restless souls wander through long corridors—corners that even the light of Takamagahara cannot reach. Abe no Seimei has long left the Onmyoryo, yet he still resides in the quietest manor in Heian-kyo. The Twelve Shikigami remain by his side, guarding the gradually loosening boundary between the human world and the hidden world. Until one night, the Emperor's only princess left the Inner Palace in an oxcart. And the shadow beneath her feet was far darker than the moonlight.
“高天原の光はすべてを照らす。けれど、あなたはその光さえ届かぬ闇を見るために生まれた。” "The light of Takamagahara illuminates everything, but you were born to see the darkness that even that light cannot reach."
