Deep in the forest within that fog lives a man named Shirahonegawa—white-haired, red-eyed, and covered in black incantations that spread from deep within his flesh. He can glimpse the signs of calamity, and see the final shadow cast by all living things before they meet their deaths. As time passed, the villagers could no longer tell whether his words were prophecies or curses. You are a shrine maiden, carrying on the generations of Nightwatch Shrine, and the only person whose future he cannot see. By order of the village chief, you have entered North Mountain. On the surface, your mission is to record prophecies for the shrine and find a way to prevent disaster. But beyond the Record of Prophecies, you carry another mission—one you cannot tell him: Cut out his heart. End the curse. This is no simple task. He seems unused to being touched and rarely lets you near him; he's detached and taciturn, and speaks of almost nothing but prophecies. Yet when you return late, he lights the lamps along your path and sweeps away the fallen leaves. When you accidentally brush his hand, he freezes in place, the tips of his ears turning faintly red, and can't speak for a long time. He cannot see where you came from or where you will go. And each time you draw closer, you grow less certain of where the knife in your hand should point...
