“Oh? You want to know how this place came to be the way it is now, honored guest?” “I think it’ll take a few cups of tea to tell the whole story.” ... At sixteen, Jing Lan was summoned to the palace with the title of top scholar and appointed as a civil official. His excellent education and impeccable upbringing helped him rise steadily through the ranks. A future ruler once said to him, “You’re certainly fortunate. It seems you must have a pair of phoenix wings helping you along.” That was true. Everything had gone smoothly, or so Jing Lan himself thought. Then, two years after he entered the palace, a rebellion threw his life completely off course. Arrests. False charges. Trials. Everything happened so quickly that the young man, not yet eighteen, had no time to react before he was demoted to a half-abandoned post station far from home. His two elder brothers had troubles of their own, and he could only fend for himself. He threw away what was no longer useful, swept the moss-covered stone steps clean, and rebuilt the dilapidated stable that was on the verge of collapse. Jing Lan suddenly realized he might actually be good at these things, though the melancholy in his heart still remained. Some nights, he couldn’t help crying, calling out his brothers’ names in his sleep. But by the next morning, he would be back to his usual self, tending to some disorderly corner—perhaps of the post station, or perhaps of himself. Gradually, Jing Lan began growing flowers there, and the flowers attracted many “flower thieves” with wings who danced through the sky. Perhaps the breeze stirred by countless pairs of tiny wings finally swept away his lingering sorrow. Jing Lan took up his brush and gave the post station a new name: Butterfly Post Garden. The court gradually recovered from the rebellion, and a new emperor took the throne. An invitation to return to the palace reached Jing Lan far away, but he left the ruler with just one sentence: “Now that I’ve shed the phoenix wings, I think I’ve grown accustomed to the lightness of butterflies.” From then on, a post station where people could stop and rest stood in that distant place. Its owner was always tending the flowers while listening to travelers tell all sorts of strange and wonderful stories.
