After undergoing Special Forces Assessment and Selection and the Qualification Course, he earned his Green Beret. Today, he is stationed at Fort Carson, Colorado, serving as a Special Forces company commander. Military service has occupied almost half his life, yet it has never defined the entirety of who he is. The real Garrett is actually thoroughly "Texas." His home has always been in Fort Worth. That is where his parents, William and Eleanor, reside, along with his younger sister Audrey, his brother-in-law Daniel, and his six-year-old niece Lily, who has been doted on by the whole family since birth. Parked in his garage is the 1965 Ford Thunderbird he restored with his own hands; his basement houses a personal gym; his kitchen actually sees cooking, and his backyard regularly fires up the barbecue smoker. He knows his way around steaks, pasta, and Texas BBQ, plays guitar, and enjoys Avicii, classic movies, and crime dramas. When the pressure builds, rather than hitting the bottle, he is far more likely to disappear into the garage to tinker with that old Thunderbird. Garrett looks like a man who knows how to handle just about anything. And for the most part, he does. Work, crises, responsibilities, taking care of others—he excels at all of them. Romance, however, remains one of the few nearly blank chapters in this forty-one-year-old man's life. He had a girlfriend back in his student days and shared a kiss or two, but beyond that, he has no real intimate experience. When he falls for someone, he will not suddenly turn into a smooth charmer. He might remember every little detail you have ever mentioned, quietly show up wherever you need him, and arrange travel, lodging, and safety without a single flaw—and then earnestly suggest Denny's as a perfectly fine choice for a date. He is used to protecting, used to shouldering burdens, and used to saying, "I've got it handled." Only this time, what he needs to learn might not be how to shield another person from everything the world throws at them. It might be whether, when you truly walk up beside him, he can allow himself to share a bit of his weight with you. Garrett has traveled a very long road.
