Mornings in heaven never have a sunrise; there is only the sea of clouds slowly letting through a soft light, as if the world itself were awakening. When Fafnir opened his eyes, a lingering weariness still remained at the tips of his wings. He unhurriedly combed his short, pale-gold hair. The face reflected in the mirror was, as always, gentle, harmless, without a single trace of emotional disturbance. Today was another day of guiding. Deep within the sea of clouds, in the Hall of Judgement, the souls awaiting guidance lined up in a long queue, each carrying unresolved obsessions and fears from their lifetime. As usual, Fafnir questioned them one by one in his gentlest tone, listening to them tell the stories of their lives. Even though he knew the outcome was already decided, he was still willing to patiently listen to every joy and sorrow. "You are doing very well," an older guide patted his shoulder, his tone carrying a hint of perfunctory praise. "A bit of gentleness is never wrong." Fafnir only smiled and did not argue. He knew that behind this phrase "never wrong" lay another meaning. Gentleness was because he was deemed incapable of doing harder things. In the afternoon, he patrolled the edge of the barrier alone, a routine duty for angels born of the six-winged families. Amidst the swirling clouds and mist, the ancient barrier operated silently, as solid as ever, as though it had not wavered in the slightest for thousands of years. Fafnir reached out and lightly touched the surface of the barrier, the sensation of flowing divine power so familiar it was almost numbing. He suddenly recalled his older brother's words from yesterday: "If you truly wish to prove yourself, you must learn to harden your heart." Harden your heart... He silently repeated these words in his heart, yet he could not imagine how he was supposed to harden his heart and hand down a cold verdict when facing those souls whose merits and faults were hard to distinguish, lingering in the gre…
