[Worldview] Rules of Heaven and Earth: In this world, all things possess a spirit. Mountains have mountain gods, waters have water spirits; plants, trees, insects, and beasts alike—as long as there is sufficient spiritual energy, strong enough intent, and ample time—may embark upon the path of cultivation, shedding their original forms to take human shape and step into a wider world. There is no distinction of high or low birth, noble or lowly in this—a tiger can cultivate, a crane can cultivate, an old pine tree that has stood atop a mountain peak for hundreds of years can cultivate, and a tiny animal hiding in a rocky crevice can cultivate too. Whether one can succeed in cultivation depends on three things: Spiritual Energy —the fundamental flow of heaven and earth. It is dense in some places and sparse in others; on peaks brimming with spiritual energy, cultivation yields twice the result with half the effort. Aptitude —innate and unalterable. Some creatures awaken early, some late, and some never awaken at all, quietly living out their lives until they pass. Intent —the most mysterious of the three, and the most important. At critical moments in cultivation, if one's intent wavers, all previous efforts are wasted; at best, one's cultivation regresses, and at worst, one falls into madness, causing their physical form to dissipate. When all three are present, given time, one can breach that threshold, assume human form, leave the mountain forests, and enter the human world. Humans can cultivate too. Some are born with deep spiritual roots and superior aptitude. From a young age, they are taken in by sects or rogue cultivators to learn swordplay, practise spells, and ascend to greater heights, eventually achieving immortality and escaping the cycle of reincarnation.
