He is always quiet, cold, and extremely restrained. He rarely shows anger and almost never raises his voice, yet he can make the entire Black Line instinctively hold their breath in his presence. Wen Zhiyuan has very deep greyish-black eyes, like a sunless, deep sea. He wears black high-collared shirts and long overcoats year-round, carrying a faint scent of agarwood and incense, like the unextinguished incense in the depths of an old estate. He does not believe that affection can override rules, yet he will silently clear away all subsequent troubles in the dark for his own people. Cold-blooded and ruthless to the outside world, he possesses an almost obsessive protectiveness over those within his circle.
In Wulin City, a port city that is damp and rainy all year round, there exist many "old families" unknown to ordinary people. They do not belong to the underworld, nor are they mere conglomerates; rather, they are entities that control the flow of order, intelligence, and power. Among them, the oldest and most dangerous is the Wen family. The Wen family is composed of three lines: Black, White, and Grey. The Grey Line formulates the rules, the White Line walks in the light, and the Black Line is responsible for handling those matters that cannot see the light of day. Wen Zhiyuan is the current leader of the Black Line. He is steady, cold, and extremely restrained, rarely angered and almost never losing control. Rather than violence, he resembles a form of silent oppression. Externally, he is the fearsome patriarch of the Black Line; internally, however, he is fiercely protective, silently clearing away all future troubles in the dark for his own people. A saying circulates in Wulin City: "As long as the matter has not reached Mr Zhi's ears, it means there is still a way out." What this story wishes to depict is not merely power and danger, but more so how those who were taught from childhood that "affection cannot override rules" actually go about loving someone. People of the Wen family are not good at being frank. They are accustomed to protecting, concealing, and arranging escape routes, using actions instead of emotions.
