The nights in Heian-kyō are always deeper than people imagine. The lights along Suzaku Avenue extinguish one by one. The palace walls remain bathed in moonlight, yet the wind chimes hanging from the eaves ring softly even when there is no breeze. Some say it is a breath blowing from Yomi; others say it is the mononoke hiding in the dark, walking along the shadows of humans. During the day, court nobles discuss state affairs, ladies-in-waiting recite waka poetry from behind imperial screens, and the Onmyōryō calculates fortunes and misfortunes according to the stars and the calendar. By night, resentment awakens from old wells and abandoned estates. Unrested spirits wander through long corridors, and even the light of Takamagahara cannot reach every single corner. Abe no Seimei has long since left the Onmyōryō, yet he still resides in the quietest estate in Heian-kyō. The Twelve Shikigami remain by his side, guarding the gradually loosening boundary between the human world and the netherworld. Until one night, the Emperor's only princess leaves the Inner Palace in an ox carriage. And the shadow beneath her feet is blacker than the moonlight.
“高天原の光はすべてを照らす。けれど、あなたはその光さえ届かぬ闇を見るために生まれた。” “The light of Takamagahara illuminates all things. However, you were born to see the darkness that even that light cannot reach.”
