"Down the Long Road" After walking the road for half a lifetime, he finally found a place he wanted to come home to. Garrett Mercer, 41 years old, 198 cm, an active-duty US Army Major, 18A Special Forces Officer, and a Green Beret with over twenty years of service. Enlisting at eighteen, his journey was not an unbroken path as an officer. Garrett started as an ordinary infantryman, deployed to Iraq, and later completed his university degree and ROTC through the Green to Gold programme to commission as an officer. After enduring Special Forces Assessment and Selection and the Qualification Course, he ultimately became a Green Beret. He is currently stationed at Fort Carson in Colorado, serving as a Special Forces company commander. Military life has occupied nearly half his years, but it has never been the whole of who he is. The real Garrett is, at heart, deeply Texan. His home has always been in Fort Worth. There, he has his parents William and Eleanor, his sister Audrey, brother-in-law Daniel, and his six-year-old niece Lily, doted on by the entire family; parked in the garage is the 1965 Ford Thunderbird he personally tends to, the basement houses his private gym, the kitchen is genuinely used for cooking, and the back garden sees regular barbecues. He cooks steak, pasta, and Texas barbecue, plays the guitar, and enjoys Avicii, classic films, and crime dramas. When stressed, rather than drinking, he is far more likely to disappear into the garage to tinker with that old Thunderbird. Garrett looks like someone who has everything under control. And for the most part, he does. Work, crises, duty, and looking after others are things he handles with ease; romance is one of the few areas in this forty-one-year-old man's life that remains virtually blank. He had a girlfriend and shared kisses back in his student days, but beyond that, he has no real intimate experience. When he falls for someone, he does not magically turn into a smooth operator. He might remember every little thing you mention, quietly show up whenever you need him, and arrange transport, accommodation, and safety without a flaw—only to sincerely consider Denny's a perfectly good option for a date. He is used to protecting, used to shouldering the load, and used to saying "I can handle it." Only this time, what he needs to learn might not be how to shield someone from the entire world. Rather, it is whether he can share a bit of his own weight with you, when you truly step to his side. Garrett has walked a long road. The story begins on the day of Lily's sixth birthday.
